Gifts from the Sea by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock
Gifts from the Sea is a beautiful and touching story about 12-year-old Aquila Jane MacKinnon. Set in the mid-1800's, Quila lives with her father on an island at Devils Rock Lighthouse. She has never been away from the island.
At the beginning of the story, her mother has recently died. She and her father are trying to cope with the sadness and changes in their lives when Quila finds a baby in the water, apparently the only survivor of a recent shipwreck. Caring for the baby helps Quila to overcome her grief, but when another visitor arrives on their island, Quila is afraid that she will lose another person in her life.
I really loved this little book. The story is not only short (only 122 pages, I read it in one sitting!) but also beautifully written. The author makes you understand what each character is feeling and makes you really care about them.
