The 7 Professors of the Far North by John Fardell
Sam was supposed to be going to stay with his Aunt Roberta for a whole week while his parents went to attend a conference in Reading. Aunt Roberta kept a very tidy house, loved cats and hated children. As Sam packed his rucksack he included his most prized possesions a swiss army knife, binoculars, his travelalarm/clock/compass/magnyfying glass then his special flashlight, he thought what a waste. It wasn't as though he was going to have any use at all for thses things. Then when Sam was about to get in the car a bright yellow motorbike with a sidecar pulled up in front of them. The man on the motorbike was Professor Ampersand and inthe sidecar his great nephew Ben and great neice Zara who were about Sam's age. Professor Ampersand, a long time friend of Sam's parents, had come to collect Sam to stay with them for a week in Edinburgh. Sam happily climbed into the sidecar for a wild ride to Professor Ampersand's house. When they arrived at the house it was not like any other taht Sam had seen. Oh the outside looked normal but they drove the motorbike and the sidecar directly into the house itself. Inside the house were all sorts of inventions, some finished, some not. But before they could finish dinner and get ready for bed someone was at the door.
At the door was Eric one of 7 professors who brought this message, "Professor Murdo has returned to Nordberg". He was just able to ask Professor Ampersand to summon the others when he collasped. The other professors were contacted and began to arrive shortly. The professors would have to find a way to stop Murdo. Before they could come up with a plan they were kidnapped by Murdo's men and takes off. One of the professors left a clue that the children must decipher and find the secret way to Nordberg. Can they do it? Will they be able to rescue the professors?
I thought this was a excellent book I didn't want to put it down. Sam got plenty of action on his vacation, of course you must read it yourself if you want to know how it ends.
