No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt
I just finished reading No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt. This historical novel is about a fifteen-year-old boy named Josh who lives in Chicago during The Great Depression. Because times are so bad, Josh has difficulty getting along with his father. His father is a broken man because, without a job, he is unable to provide for his family. As a result, Josh and his ten-year-old brother, Joey, leave home in search of a more promising location. What they find is more poverty. Throughout their journey, the boys struggle to stay alive. They are forced to swallow their pride and beg for food. Fortunately, they meet a cast of amazingly selfless characters that help the boys survive. Josh, who has a tendency to be stubborn like his father, learns about life and love, and eventually comes to realize that family is the most important thing a person has. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are struggling to get along with your parents or need to be reminded that money cannot buy happiness.
