The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt
How can you not like Holling Hoodhood! From the very first day of 7th grade at Camillo Junior High, Holling is convinced that his teacher, Mrs. Baker, hates him - not that he has done anything...he just feels it in the way she looks at him.
Mrs. Baker is used to having free time on Wednesday afternoons when half of the 7th grade goes to St. Adelbert's for Catechism classes and the other half goes to Temple Beth-El for Hebrew School. But Holling is Presbyterian...so Mrs. Baker finds things to keep Holliing busy, starting with cleaning the classroom and clapping erasers. When Holling inadvertently lets the classroom "pet" rats, Sycorax and Caliban, escape into the ceiling, Mrs. Baker decides that Holling should read Shakespeare rather than clean.
Holling is a riot as he relates his tragic/comic journey through 7th grade; including his Perfect Family, his part in a Shakespearean play (in yellow tights! with feathers!), his friends and enemies, his adventures and misadventures, all the while quoting Shakespeare's greatest curses!
Gary D. Schmidt has written another GREAT story! You will love it!
