Heat by Mike Lupica
For Michael Arroyo, growing up in the shadow of Yankee Stadium, he is forever a boy on the outside looking in. The only way for him to get inside is to pitch his little league team into the district finals.
There is however a huge problem, in that Michael is so good, that rival coaches devise a way to get Michael benched probably for the rest of the year. They require Michael to produce his birth certificate to prove that he is only twelve, in order to play in Little League. Michael's birth certificate is somewhere stuck in his native Cuba. With no mother or father, he has no way to prove his correct age.
There is another problem bigger than baseball, a secret that in the hands of social services could be the demise not only of Michael but his older brother Carlos. Michael is terrified of being taken away, form his home and the only family he has.
