Phineas L. MacGuire... Blasts Off by Frances O'Roark Dowell
"Mac" is a down-to-earth guy. He likes to be called "Mac", but don't ever think about calling him by his middle name, "Listerman". It is not so much that Mac is a genius; he knows how to ask the right questions and has a keen sense of scientific inquiry. He enjoys solving problems and doesn't expect an immediate solution. He also has good friends and a wonderful support system. They actually seek him out. The highlight of his week is going to the public library. Mrs. Zelinski, the librarian, always has a scientific book for him. Mr. Reid, the custodian of Woodbrook Elementary School is so special that Mac wants him to be principal.
Mac wants to earn enough money to go to Space Camp. It is Mr.Reid who assists Max in trying to reach his goal. His loyal friends, Aretha and Ben, are there from the beginning. They are there when Mac gets his first job as a dog-walker for a huge Labrador retriever named Lemon Drop. They are there for the cool, yet gross, experiments about dog slobber.
1. Do you think that the author makes too big of a deal about which grade Max
2. Do you think Mac could have waited a year or more to apply to the space camp?
3. Wouldn't it be great to be the neighbor of Max, Aretha, and Ben?
4. Will I read the other chapter books in this series?
