The 39 Clues: Book 1, The Maze of Bones

The Maze of Bones
"Read the books. Play the game. Win the prizes!"
That's what it says on the cover of The 39 Clues books. Who can resist that?

In the first book, The Maze of Bones, by Rick Riordan, we meet orphans Amy and Dan Cahill. They live in an apartment with a succesion of nannies (or rather, au pairs). Their only relatives are their Great Aunt Beatrice, who lives across town from them and, as their legal guardian, is responsible for hiring the succession of au pairs, and their Grandmother Grace, who has, unfortunately, just died.
A huge number of people attend Grace's funeral and Amy and Dan are amazed to find that they are related to all of them... and all of them are very interested in hearing Grace's will.

Pandemonium breaks out at the reading of the will when the relatives learn that they must make a choice (in the next 5 minutes!); take one million dollars now and walk away, or get the first of 39 clues that will lead the winner to "a secret that will make him or her the most powerful and influential human being on the planet."

Seven teams accept the challenge, including fourteen-year-old Amy and eleven-year-old Dan and the adventure begins! The first clue takes the teams from Boston to Philadephia and then to Paris, France, in search of the clue left by Benjamin Franklin. Along the way, Amy and Dan are nearly trapped in Grace's buring mansion, nearly killed in a bomb blast at the Franklin Institute, nearly run over by a Metro train beneath Paris, and nearly buried alive in a graveyard on Ile-St-Louis, as the other teams try to beat them to each destination. In the end, Amy and Dan find what they need and as the book comes to an end, they are heading off to Vienna, Austria, in search of the next clue... left by "W. A. M." (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!)

This looks like it wil be an exciting series. I couldn't stop reading! Every time Amy and Dan turned around they were in some kind of mortal danger! Will they find all the clues or will the other teams get to them first? What will happen in Vienna? Will they eventually win the prize... or will YOU win the prize? Check out the 39 Clues website to see how you can participate.
