Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper
Out of My Mind is a book that I would call "Required Life Reading". It is emotional and eye opening. It brings to light the uniqueness, talent and learning capabilities of individuals with disabilities. I have worked with children who struggle through a variety of language, learning and mobile abilities. This book opened my eyes even more to the connections I have with kids who may appear different from me. Not to mention the audio version of the book (on Playaway) made the character come to life. I can't wait to read this again so that I can experience Sharon Draper's writing and discover what else the book has to offer me.
Just know that when you read this book you will be moved. Most likely in both positive and negative ways. So be prepared to talk about it with parents, teachers and friends.
