Born to Fly by Michael Ferrari
It is 1942 and Bird doesn't fit the standard expectations for a girl of her time. First of all, she loves to fly in airplanes with her dad. Secondly, she rarely wears dresses. Life is good until Bird's best friend, her dad, is called to be a pilot in World War 2. Everyone around her is affected as many men from their small town are enlisted, even the town sheriff.
Bird's friend Kenji and his uncle take a lot of grief fromtheir small town of Florida because they are of Japanese decent and the residents are questioning where their loyalties lie. World War 2 did not bring out the best in people and this book does not hide those flaws.
If you enjoy historical fiction filled with adventure, suspense, fear and sadness, then this book is for you!
