The Legend of Diamond Lil: A J.J. Tully Mystery by Doreen Cronin
This prolific author has another hit with this second installment of the J.J. Tully Mysteries. This is a blend of humor and mystery. J. J. is a former search-and-rescue dog. He thought he was going to get some rest, but an unannounced dog mysteriously shows up next door. Diamond Lil, the new dog, is spending too much time with the chickens. J.J. has to figure it out all by himself. There is a possum loose and J. J. feels as if it is up to him to keep everyone safe.
Kevin Cordell did the most excellent job of matching the illustrations with the story. (I've rarely seen a better match.) This book is only 144 pages in length and the lexile score is 630. What a great family read-aloud. You might want to read it to your younger friends or family members, Don't miss the first book in the series: The Trouble with Chickens. I'll keep you posted when a new one will be published.
