A Smidgen of Sky by Dianna Dorisi Winget
Four years ago Piper Lee DeLuna's father disappeared while flying and now her Mama is getting married, which means Piper Lee is about to get a new family. But Piper Lee does not want a new daddy or a stepsister. So Piper hatches a plan to get the wedding called off while at the same time trying to find her father. Piper gets into some trouble and then realizes she has to learn to be careful what she wishes for; she may or may not get the results she intended. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book but as soon as I met Piper, she drew me in. I thought Piper was pretty realistic for a ten year old. She doesn't always do the smart thing and she is often selfish, but she is definitely real. I also liked how the relationship with Ginger, her soon-to-be stepsister, began to evolve and how they slowing began to develop a friendship.
