Okay For Now by Gary D.Schmidt
The first thing that hit me about this book is the constant negativity and yes, abuse, that this boy had to endure. Doug had to move almost immediately during the summer of his junior high school. If that wasn't bad enough, his family moved to a very small town where everyone knows everyone. The town is so small that the library is only opened on Saturdays. The library proves to be almost his only salvation. A librarian discovers Doug's artistic talent and mentors him. He is also befriended by Lil, a daughter of the grocery store owner.
