Okay For Now by Gary D.Schmidt

Okay for NowThe first thing that hit me about this book is the constant negativity and yes, abuse, that this boy had to endure. Doug had to move almost immediately during the summer of his junior high school. If that wasn't bad enough, his family moved to a very small town where everyone knows everyone. The town is so small that the library is only opened on Saturdays. The library proves to be almost his only salvation. A librarian discovers Doug's artistic talent and mentors him. He is also befriended by Lil, a daughter of the grocery store owner. Doug has quite a few adventures while delivering groceries for the store. Doug really is a great guy. He had to go through this during the Viet Nam War and the incredible, almost unthinkable, moon-landing. At the beginning of each chapter Gary D. Schmidt places an appropriate Audobon painting. This is the famous Gary D. Schmidt who won the Newbery Honor Award for Wednesday Wars. This is the companion to Wednesday Wars. This one is the best! *2014 Rebecca Caudill Award Nominee*
