White Fur Flying by Patricia MacLachlan

White Fur FlyingPhillip comes to live with an aunt in the summer while his parents work out some problems. Phillip does not speak; he can speak, but he only talks with the neighbor's dog. The rescue dogs of Zoe's family have all been Great Pyrenees.  A huge storm which includes hail begins just when Phillip is chasing after one of the dogs that ran away.  The dog rescues Phillip by finding shelter.  Who ends up rescuing whom?

This book is great for seven to nine year old children and even more children for family read-alouds.  This realistic fiction uses animals to assist with understanding and patience.  Even the parrot speaks, "You can't know". This book demonstrates the delicate balance of people's feelings, but also shows how patience and time can heal .  Even though there is a storm, this is a very calming book.  The way Patricia MacLachlan writes is so peaceful.  You don't have to be a dog lover to love this book.
