Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo

Flora & UlyssesHoly bagumba! She did it again. It is almost impossible to win the Newbery Award for children's fiction. It is truly incredible that Kate DiCamillo just won it a second time for Flora & Ulysses:The Illuminated Adventures.  Flora is really into superhero comics and a book series about terrible things that can happen to you. It's a good thing that she read them because she uses the information. A squirrel gets suctioned into a vacuum cleaner.  Flora performs CPR on the squirrel and it turns into a superhero. Not only can the squirrel fly and understand English, it can also type poetry.  Flora's friend is blind, but he helps to find the squirrel when it is kidnapped.  The friends also help each other when it comes to dealing with the most important people who have let them down - their parents. To calm herself down, Flora would not hope; instead, observe. Creative elements are special in this witty fantasy, but I think Kate DiCamillo's secret is exposing truths that heal the heart.  She has had quite a year. It has been announced that Kate DiCamillo will be the new National Ambassador for Young People's Literature for two years.  Don't be surprised if she travels near you. Holy unanticipated occurrence!
