Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff

Rump: the True Story of Rumpelstiltskin Does your name really decide your destiny?  In the magic kingdom where 12-year-old Rump is growing up, your name affects your status in life.  When he was born, his mother only had time to say a portion of his name before she suddenly passed away.  So he was known as Rump.  Imagine growing up with a name like that!  No wonder you would think you have a doomed future, plus you would totally attract bullies.  Life is not easy on the mountain.  Rump must work finding gold for King Barf in the mines in exchange for a little food that he gets for himself and his grandmother.  But then his luck seems to change when he finds an old spinning wheel and learns that he can spin straw into gold.  His best friend, Red, warns him that magic is dangerous and she happens to be right as he spins himself into a dangerous curse.  Rump tries to change the course of his future as he goes on a perilous quest fighting off gold-loving pixies, trolls, and a foolish queen.

I am loving these fractured fairy tales that are being published these days and this one is a 2016 Caudill Nominee.  This tale changed my perspective on Rumpelstiltskin (never been a fan until now).  The book tackles the question do labels people get placed on them or labels they give themselves really determine their fate?  Can someone break free of the label?  The story portrays how a person's inner strength actually molds their destiny. As I said earlier, one of my new favorite books that I will be recommending to you the next time you ask "Do you know any good books?"  Oh, and guess what?  Liesl Shurtliff is releasing another book titled Jack:  The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk.  Guess whose going to be first in line to check out that book!
