The Story of Diva and Flea by Mo Willems and Tony DiTerlizzi
Can you imagine living in an apartment building and not ever leaving the property? Well, that is what Diva, the dog, does and she takes her guarding responsibility seriously. To her surprise, a cat keeps coming by and she finally gets up the courage to ask the cat if he enjoys hurting her feelings. The cat is so ashamed. The cat, Flea, encourages her to explore more and be less fearful of feet. Diva encourages Flea to be less fearful of brooms and introduces Flea to the concept of a warm home and breakfast. With friendship comes trust. With trust comes friendship.
This early chapter book includes a few French words. I have no idea why the popular Mo Willems had to team up with the amazing Tony DiTerlizzi. It must be because they are friends and trust each other. DiTerlizzi only uses black, green and red for the illustrations - perfect. Willems story is based on animals he saw in Paris - perfect. They are so creative that they added their own notes at the back of the book. They are so creative that they did not say the boring "written and illustrated" on the cover. Instead, it says, "As TOLD & SHOWN by Mo Willems and Tony DiTerlizzi" - a perfect team.
