School Ship Tobermory by Alexander McCall Smith
Land ho! While this author is known for adult mysteries, he also writes a children's series in which Ben and Fiona McTavish have a sea faring kind of education. Firstly, these teen twins have been homeschooled inside a submarine with their parents. Mom and dad, famous marine biologists, look at many different locations for Ben and Fiona to attend boarding school. After rejecting a school on a jagged mountain top, they chose the School Ship Tobermory, a floating school under the charge Captain MacBeth. They meet Badger, Thomas, and Poppy on the first day and quickly discover that life on the boat can be just like any other school. The ship bullies, William, Geoffrey, and Maximillian, are a problem right away. However, they are a much smaller problem when there is suspicious activity on another ship, the Albatross. The ship is supposed to be filming a movie but the actors seem just a little bit different. And, why doesn't the camera have film in the camera when the director is shooting the scenes?
For fans of The Initiation by Ridley Pearson and Harry Potter titles, this will give readers a quick introduction to life at sea and another view of boarding school. Ben and Fiona continue their ocean adventure in The Sands of Shark Island in July 2017.
